Studying and safeguarding wild fish populations and habitats in the Pacific Northwest and beyond
The Wilderness Calling
The Wilderness Calling Conservation Initiative (TWCCI) is a conservation organization rooted in the Pacific Northwest, United States, dedicated to preserving wild fish populations and safeguarding critical habitats in Oregon’s Northwest Coast Zone and beyond. United by a shared mission to research, protect, and advocate for the creatures that inhabit our watersheds, our team brings expertise across fields including guiding, business, and fisheries biology. Driven by a deep commitment to education, preservation, and legacy, we aim to inspire lasting change to benefit all life within these vital ecosystems.
Our
Tagging Study
As Oregon fishers are aware, there has been a large decline in the populations of Wild Steelhead over the past 50 years. One of the most understudied aspects of a Steelhead's life cycle is their behavior and migration patterns in the Ocean.
The aim of this project is to tag and track Kelts (re-returning steelhead,) using cutting edge satellite tags, along Oregon’s coastal rivers. This study will provide scientists insights into the behavior of these fish since each fish tells a unique story. At the end of our 5 year study, we hope to arm fisheries management biologists with granular data that can identify critical habitat to protect and restore these culturally and economically important fish for future generations.
